10 Things I Can’t Live Without

It’s Friiiiiii-day!  Perhaps Friday should be one of the “things” I can’t live without…

We’ve come to the end of the “10 Things” guest-blogger line, and I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed the features.  I’m all geared up to share my “10 things” with you, too!  Since I regularly tell y’all how much I L-O-V-E my husband, babies (of the human and canine variety), family and friends, you won’t see them featured on this list…just know that they take “top dog” on the big list!

1.  All Small & Mighty Time-Released Freshness Laundry Detergent.  I grew up on Tide detergent…but when I started doing my own laundry, I switched to detergent that was more inexpensive – cut me some slack, I was a college student!  I have now sampled nearly every brand of detergent that is in existence, but I came back to this particular kind because of the “time-released freshness” bit.  Even when guests visit, they comment on how clean things (like sheets) smell for days after they’ve been used.  Dare I say that All Small & Mighty Time-Released Freshness laundry detergent has helped me come to love laundry day?!

2.  Hallmark Stores.  Hello, my name is Jane and I’m an addict.  That’s what I say at my HA meetings – Hallmark Anonymous…okay, okay, so those meetings don’t really exist…but they should!  I have never met a Hallmark Store that I didn’t like love.  Stationery, music, collectibles, trinkets, balloons…it’s heaven for this girl; and, my proudest day was when I was made a “Platinum” Gold Crown Card member (Just kidding…but, really!).

3.  Daily Devotionals.  I love my family and friends; but, I really LOVE Jesus!  To keep me on the straight and narrow, I read my Proverbs 31 every morning, and end the day with my “Daily Wisdom for Mothers” devotional.  And did I mention that I’m starting the kids on a devotional habit, too?  It’s Jesus Calling:  365 Devotions for Kids.  Eden is just getting to the age where she’s understanding what this book is talking about…but it applies to kids through the teenage years, too.  You can usually find us reading it and talking about it each morning over breakfast.

4.  Gadgets.  You know, of the technological variety.  My BlackBerry was my lifeline during this deployment; my laptop is just my plain old lifeline!  My emotions come out easily and quickly when I blog, and my laptop is my vehicle to blogging.  I also downloaded the Pandora app for my phone, so I can play music on it whenever the mood strikes me, too.  Technology (as a whole) makes being a military family a little easier – I’m just a quick phone call or Skype session away from my loved ones.  When I think about the military spouses before us who waited by the mail box daily, I am even more grateful.

5.  Books.  I’ve apparently always had a thirst for knowledge…around eight years old, my mom found me perusing the local newspaper – actually reading the articles, not just thumbing through to the funnies.  And in the words of my tenth grade Honors English teacher (love you dearly, Mr. Hoff!), “knowledge is power, and power is victory.”  If he only knew how right he is/was.  In any case, books are my key to the world.  I’m currently reading Former President Bush’s memoir, Decision Points, and I’m fascinated.  When I’m finished with his, I’m moving on to his wife’s memoir, Spoken from the Heart.

6.  My sewing machine.  When I’m making something new for the kids to wear, or fashioning some window treatments, or whatever else tickles my fancy – the rest of the world melts away and it’s just me, some fabric, a few pins, and the hum of a machine.  Add in the satisfaction I feel from whipping something out of nothing, and I’m a happy gal.

7.  L.L. Bean Boat-and-Tote Bags.  I received my very first one a couple of years ago, and loved it.  In fact, I loved it so much that I ordered one for Eden to use as her school bag when she was in daycare.  I ordered one for Patton to use as his diaper bag.  I love them for the kids because they’ll grow with them; it isn’t a traditional bag, and someday he’ll be able to use it to cart his sports stuff around.  I have a couple more that we use for travel, grocery shopping reusable bags, multipurpose bags, etc.  They are just so durable; buy one and it will last your lifetime…so make sure you pick a color/style/size you’ll love forever!

8.  Barnes & Noble Membership Card.  My in-laws got this for me as a Christmas present last year (which reminds me…it’s coming up for renewal…I better get on that!).  I love books (see “thing” #5), and this membership allows me to buy books/magazines/music/games & toys, etc. for a much deeper discount.  Two other little perks?  It’s transferable to family (so Micah, my in-laws, and my parents can use it, too) – and, members get free express shipping when you order online (where the prices are also often lower than in the stores!).  Between gas, wear & tear on a vehicle, and scheduling errands around two little kids, I’m more than happy to forgo the stress and just wait a few days for my order.  Oh – one more perk – it can also be used in the cafe!  So, when we make a monthly visit to the actual store for kids’ story time, we get a special snack from the cafe, and I pick up my monthly supply of Starbucks coffee beans – all with a sweet discount!

9.  The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso.  Seriously.  I cannot live without an entire outlet mall.  It’s just so fantastic and has everything I need all in one place.  Very few crowds, open air, good prices.  It’s my favorite place to shop in El Paso; it’s home to Carter’s, Old Navy, Gap…it’s a list longer than my arm, friends.  Oh, and don’t let me forget – Eden’s favorite – the Disney Store!

10.  Friends DVDs.  Friends is my all-time favorite show.  Every single episode can make me crack up and put me in a better mood.  I love all the character types, the story lines, and the actors.  The writers for that show are absolutely brilliant.  I have all of the seasons on DVD.  Micah and I like to challenge each other on Friends trivia.  And – I’ll admit – I have said, “Remember that one time on Friends…?”  People that never watched the show think I’m crazy, but a little bit crazy is alright…Phoebe Buffay is proof of that!

Guess what?  I couldn’t narrow it down, so you’re getting 11 Things I Can’t Live Without!

11.  The DVR.  We have had DVR for a couple of years now…when we first married we were poor college students with an infant and just lucky to have a TV!  Now you know what they say…once you go DVR, you don’t go back!  I love to watch TV, and truthfully, I got through each day of the deployment by saying to myself, “Self, it’s Tuesday.  Biggest Loser and Glee tonight.  You just have to make it through the bedtime routine and then you are home free.”  Maybe I didn’t do that every day, but I did do that occasionally…I had to have something to look forward to!  The beautiful thing about DVR is that, if bath time ran a little longer, I could still watch my favorite shows from the beginning – AND (here’s the fantastic part) – you can skip through commercials!  If you don’t have DVR, you need to hop on the bandwagon (I’m looking at you, Mom). :)

Sorry I had to extend my list to 11!  It probably wasn’t fair to my guest bloggers, but…my blog, my rules, right?!  Kidding!

Just to recap – here are links to my guest bloggers and their “10 Things” in case you missed it.

A big giant THANK YOU again to each of my guest bloggers.  I am so lucky to have such fun and supportive bloggy friends – AND – loyal blog readers.  So now it’s your turn – What are your 10 things, my friend?

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Courtney from Trying to survive in the D

Back again with another fun “10 Things!”  I’m so excited to share this one with you because Courtney is one of my best friends in this entire world.  We met in a Spanish class during the first semester of our freshman year of college.  She worked a little magic and got us invited to a party where I started dating Micah.  She was my Maid of Honor for our wedding, and we consider her our kids’ “auntie.”  Growing up without a sister, Courtney quickly became the sister I never had.  I’m finding it hard to put into words how much I love Court – she is fantastic and my life would be so sad without her.  Her “10 Things” are so fun; and, are a true reflection of what a great person she is!

1. My parents- My parents have been my rock since day 1. We’re extremely close and they have done everything to give me whatever I ever needed or wanted. They’re my biggest champions in life and I can’t imagine my life without them.

2. Burt’s Bees Chapstick- This is the best chapstick-period. I have tubes of this at my desk at work, in my car, in almost all of my purses, my nightstand and makeup bag lol! The replenishing pomegrante kind is my favorite but all Burt’s chapsticks are top notch and pretty inexpensive!

3. Spain- I know it’s probably weird to not be able to live without an entire country- but let me explain lol. I started studying Spanish in the 8th grade, took it all four years of high school and college. I had the most amazing time and even met one of my best friends in a Spanish class(Love you Jane!). In 2002 I got to travel for 2 weeks to Spain with my high school and even got to return in 2005 to study for 3 months. How cool is that?! Since studying there I was able to go back one more time this past March for Spring Break. I love everything about Spain- the food, the culture, the art and the people. My grandma was Spanish so I like think that I got it from her.

4. Apple Cider-Every fall I look forward to apple cider. Hot, cold, spiked, plain- I will drink it any way it comes. As a Midwest girl I feel like it should be made the official drink of Michigan!

5. My boyfriend- I’m an extremely independent person and like to think that I would be okay on my own. Honestly, without Gabe I have no clue where I would be. We met the week before Christmas 2009 and have pretty much been insepearatable ever since. We met through our friends Kristen and Mike. You see, Kristen and I went to kindergarten together and Mike and Gabe went to high school together. Kristen and Mike at that time had been dating for about a year and a half. They met through our friends Doug and Nikki. Doug and Nikki got married in the summer of 2009 and guess who they met through? Gabe.  So our story goes like this- Gabe introduced Doug and Nikki, Doug and Nikki introduced Kristen and Mike and Kristen and Mike introduced Gabe and I. This story is definitely one for the ages- and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Gabe and I like to think that we came into each other’s lives at the perfect time- I was finishing grad school and about to move back to Detroit and he was just getting back on his feet after a hard breakup. We had originally decided to just be friends and see if time would make things differently. Well, fate stepped in and we started dating 3 weeks after meeting. We’ve been together ever since and I honestly can’t imagine my life without him. He’s my rock, best friend and the love of my life. He means the world to me and makes my days definitely brighter.

6,  Gummy worms- I have the worst sweet tooth period. I’ll eat any type of candy- any time. My favorite, though, are gummy worms. Sweet, sour, big ones, little ones-doesn’t matter. When I go to the movies I usually buy a huge bag before and munch on them throughout the entire movie. I’ve had bags in my desk, car, backpack, etc. They are definitely my favorite- maybe I should buy stock in the company haha!

7. Detroit- I am a city girl through and through. If you know me really well you know that I do not thrive in the country. When I lived in Mt. Pleasant I yearned for Detroit. The smell, the sights, the sounds- it’s home. I technically live in the city but am on the outskirts of the city limits. Going downtown to me is not only an adventure but it’s like 2nd nature. I know every freeway like the back of my  hand and I can figure out where I’m going pretty easily. The culture, food and people of the city are what make it great too. It’s definitely a working class city built on hope and we definitely need some of that these days.

8. The Detroit Tigers- I’ve been a Tiger’s fan since before I was born-seriously. I’ve been going to games since I could walk and I would never, ever root for another team-especially not the Yankees. Baseball games mean a lot to me too because they’re something that I’ve gone to a lot with my dad. My dad played baseball growing up and I ended up playing softball in junior high and high school. It’s definitely a family sport and my Tiger’s are some of the best.  Anywhere I can catch a game you bet you can find me by the TV with a cold beer in hand. Even in Spain I kept up with the Tiger’s stats and followed games. I’m definitely a diehard fan!

9. Daisies- I think this is the cheeriest flower there is. Daisies are the happy flower and I always try to have some around to cheer me up. Gerbera daisies are my favorite. The bright colors and large flowers are definitely a conversation starter!

10. Finally- My car- I don’t have the best car in the world by far. It’s a 2001 Ford Focus with over 109,000 miles on it- but it’s mine. I saved for 2 years and bought it last year. I ended up getting my drivers license late in life so I ended up getting the Focus( or Franny as I call her) last April. My car has taken me everywhere from school and back to up north and all over MI. My car is definitely my most prized possession and I don’t know where I would be with out it.- probably riding the bus haha!

Isn’t Courtney so fun and sweet?!  If you enjoyed her list, you can catch her blogging at Trying to survive in the D!  To round out the week, I’ll be sharing my “10 Things” tomorrow!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Mrs. G.I. Joe from ACU’s, Stiletto Shoes and Pretty Pink Tutus

It’s a “10 Things” kind-a week around here!  My plan is to finish sharing my friends’ “10 Things,” and also share mine, by the end of the week.  It’s all about goals.  :) Today, I’m introducing you to Mrs. G.I. Joe.  Her husband is an Army man, and I started reading her blog when we moved to Georgia.  I didn’t have many friends there, especially military friends, and reading her blog made me feel like I was part of a special sisterhood – in fact, it still does!  I was lucky enough to win a book through a giveaway on her site; and, then we connected on Facebook.  I love keeping up with fun things going on in her life – which usually include her hubby, sweet little girl, Lucy, and writing.  Mrs. G.I. Joe is a fantastic writer and I look forward to the day when I can purchase one of her books from Barnes & Noble!  Until then, I’ll be following her blog.  Another thing that impresses and inspires me is Mrs. G.I. Joe’s commitment to military spouses -supporting, guiding, listening, sharing…the list goes on!  Not only does she discuss these topics on her own blog, but she co-founded the “Ask the Milies” blog to specifically address issues concerning military spouses; and, their column is a weekly feature with Blue Star Families.  Here’s Mrs. G.I. Joe’s “10 Things:”

I could give the most nauseating breakdown of the top 10 things that I can’t live without, but you probably wouldn’t want to spend the next few minutes reading all about the exact shade of G.I. Joe’s eyes—is it ocean blue, or robin’s egg blue, or sky blue—and the various ways that Lucy gives kisses. The wet, slobbery kind that wake me up with giggles in the morning, all the way to the sweet pecks she insists on giving me anytime Mommy gets a boo-boo. But I figure if you look at my blog for even a minute you’ll know I adore my family. So that’s a given :) Aside from the awesomeness that is my husband and babycakes, here are 10 things (in no specific order) that give life a juicy cherry on top:

1.  ACU’s. Seeing piles of them around my house or seeing a soldier driving down the street with his elbow hanging out the window makes my heart flutter. It reminds that we get to be part of something much bigger than ourselves.

2.  Stupid Movies. My life is serious enough without making myself watch Dear John or read books like My Sister’s Keeper. I’d much rather laugh till I cry over movies like I Love You, Man, instead of just crying.

3.  Starbucks. I know tons of people out there who find these incredible little family-owned-one-shop-one-town kind of coffee places and say they are better than Starbucks. But I LOVE knowing that I can go to practically any country and see that green sign and just know I’ll find a cup of coffee that tastes just like home.

4.  Camera. G.I. Joe teases me constantly that life is what happens while I’m snapping away. But I am a shutterbug with no hope of rehabilitation!

5.  Tyler Ward music. When I need a pick me up I go straight to his youtube channel. His videos motivate me to get up and get moving even on rainy days when all I want to do is bum around in bed.

Tyler Ward’s YouTube channel

6.  Laptop. No explanations necessary. Laptops, as well as cell phones, are life-lines for military spouses.

7.  Barnes and Noble. I have a major addiction to that place. Its not even just about spending money or reading books. Although, I do love buying books. Just being in B & N makes a bad day seem less daunting and turns a good day into a great day.

8.  Yankee Candles. Is it wrong I love tricking my parents and husband by lighting baked-goods candles and make them think that I’ve been baking all day when they come in?

9.  Disney World. Seeing the way my princess’s face lights up there is a joy unlike any other.

10.  Italian Food!!!!! We’re pretty sure at this point that Marinara has replaced all my blood. And you might be wondering what this picture has to do with Italian food? Well, its Lucy covered in chocolate mousse from an Italian place in Disney World :)

Thank you, Mrs. G.I. Joe, for sharing your fun list with all of us!  If you enjoyed Mrs. G.I. Joe’s list, you can follow her blog:  ACU’s, Stiletto Shoes and Pretty Pink Tutus.  As I mentioned before, she also co-founded Ask the Milies, which is a weekly feature for Blue Star Families.  Mrs. G.I. Joe has so many great ideas for military spouses, and has a wealth of knowledge; I recommend contacting her (and The Milies) if you have any question – if she doesn’t know the answer, I’m confident that they’ll find it!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Kelsey from Jars of Clay

Kelsey and I met in college; we knew each other and respected each other, but we weren’t especially close friends.  After we both graduated and moved on, we reconnected.  Truthfully, we started talking more when we had something very painful in common – miscarriages.  We’ve since both had successful and happy pregnancies – me with Patton, and Kelsey just had sweet Emersyn Grace!

Obviously, Kelsey and I have much happier things to share and chat about now – motherhood, wife-hood, and all sorts of fun stuff!  I’m so grateful for Kelsey’s friendship, and I’m so inspired by her.  Read on to hear about Kelsey’s perspective on the “10 Things” she can’t live without!

1. Jesus Without the Lord in my life, I truly don’t know where I’d be today.  It might sound a bit overdone, but I really do believe this.  I haven’t always been a perfect Christian.  I’ve made excuses, missed church, and failed to pray when I should have.  But the Lord has forgiven me each time I’ve asked Him to, and He continues to bless me, even when I might not see it that way.  I know that through each challenge I face, He will be with me.

2. Husband 6 years ago, I was blessed enough to be able to meet my husband.  He has been mt strong hold through so many different things, from leaving Grand Rapids to allowing me to become a Mom.  He has always been able to make me laugh, has given hugs and kisses freely, and has proven to be an amazing father.  Life without him would not be as rich, and I would be a much different person than I am now.

3. My Son Because I never thought I could have children, Nolan has been that much more of a blessing in my life.  He has taught me so much about patience, but especially about love.  He is such a kind, loving, little boy.  He rewards me daily with his hugs and kisses, and the joy he takes in each new day.  I’m continually amazed at his creativity and compassion for others, even at such a young age.  We are very blessed.

4. My Family Every time we get together, it’s always so much fun.  It reminds me of how much I miss by no longer living in Grand Rapids, and why I’m so lucky in the first place.  Whether we’re hanging out by the pool on a holiday weekend, or just sitting around talking, a lot of laughter is sure to follow!

5. Mint Shampoo I’ll be honest, I’m picky about my shampoo.  I’ve tried store brand varieties and nothing compares to the clean, tingly, feeling of a good mint shampoo.  Although it’s a little more expensive, you don’t use as much as you would a non-salon brand, so it’s totally worth the price!

6. Candles My favorite candles are from Our Own Candle Company.  They burn more evenly than any candle I’ve ever bought, and come in yummy scents like Hot Apple Pie, Ginger Peach, and Root Beer Float.

7. Grey’s Anatomy I didn’t really get into this show until about the fifth season, but now I’m hooked.  Though not what you’d call educational television, it’s definitely my guilty pleasure.  Every Thursday night you can find me glued to the tube while my husband groans in the other room.

8. My Crockpot This thing has become a new best friend in recent months.  Not only is it a time saver on busy evenings, but it makes your house smell amazing after a meal has been simmering all day!

9. My Friends Living 2 hours away from where I was born and raised hasn’t been easy, but luckily I’ve been able to establish some lasting friendships that have withstood the distance.  Though we don’t get to see each other nearly as often as I’d like, it’s reassuring to know that they are literally a phone call (and a car ride) away.

10.Fall Weather I guess this means I won’t be moving South anytime soon!  Fall is most definitely my favorite time of year, hands down.  I love everything about it.  Warm apple cider, crisp breezes, and the crunch of leaves underfoot.  I especially love the fall colors.  Nothings beats going for an afternoon drive and seeing that the leaves have begun to change.

Isn’t Kelsey just so fun and sweet?!  I’m so excited for her and her family to welcome a new baby.  I’m sure that once Kelsey gets through the sleep deprivation that comes with a new addition, she’ll be back to blogging and have lots of fun things to share about being a mama of two!  You can follow her blog here:  Jars of Clay.

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Sara from The Keast Family Website

***The GIVEAWAY closes at midnight (MST) – Enter to win one of two Hallmark Recordable Storybooks!***

Sara is my featured blog writer and friend this week.  We met at college on the cheerleading team…

Sara’s on the far right, spotting for the crazy girl on top – me!  :)

One of my fondest memories from college was one evening in particular when Sara, my college roomie and fellow cheerleader, Hope, and I sat chatting in the Regina Hall lounge.  We sat down and were giggling (yes, like stereotypical cheerleaders), and before we knew it, several hours had passed and it was 2 am!  I think we ordered pizza, too…my memory escapes me.  Anyhow, Sara left Aquinas and went to cosmetology school, and she was dating a guy named Bryan.  We kinda-sorta kept in touch, but then we really reconnected a couple of years ago when we realized how much we still had in common – her husband (Bryan!) was in the Navy, Micah was in the Army…their daughter, Evelyn, was born in August of 2007, Eden was born in November of 2007…and now we’re both moms of two.  And, Sara keeps a family blog – The Keast Family Website – and channels a lot of her creative energy into her business – Belle Ragazze Creations.  If you are looking for a cozy and cute homemade hat, as well as other fun accessories for life, Sara is your gal!  Enough rambling from me – here are Sara’s 10 things:

1.  My Husband – My amazing, strong, very smart, loving, caring Sailor of a husband, Bryan! I love him so much! Just wish he didn’t have to be gone out to sea so much! lol We’ve been together since Sept 2004 and have been married since November 4th 2006! We’ve lived in two different states, 5 different cities, 8 different places(apts, houses, etc), have had 8 pets, 2 beautiful girls and have been part of the U.S. Navy for almost 4 1/2 years now.

2. My Girls – My beautiful Daughters – Evelyn & Bella. My life wouldn’t be complete without them and although there are times that our children drive us crazy(all you moms know what I’m talking about lol) I love them with all my heart. Life just wouldn’t be the same without them. Being a mommy is an amazing thing.

3. Music – I couldn’t imagine life without music. I can play over 10 instruments. Was in a band for over 10 years. 5th, 6th, Middle School, High School, Marching Band, Jazz Band and even in college at Aquinas College. I listen to all kinds of music and very rarely will you find me without some kind of music playing around me. Everything from Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Chesney, Ella Fitzgerald, Muse, Mozart, etc.

4. My Parents – I love my Mom & Dad. They’re amazing people and have done so much for me in my life. I’ve watched them both go through some really hard times and they both amaze me with their strength, courage, love & wisdom. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be the person that I am today without them. (Other than the fact that I wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the two of them lol)
5. The Internet – It’s my lifeline to keep in touch with my family and friends that ALL live so far away. To make new friends on The Mommies Network. Share pictures and videos of my girls as they grow with our family and friends. My only form of communication with my husband while he’s out to sea. And SO MUCH MORE.
6. Books – Oh what would I do without books! I LOVE love LOVe love LOVE books! Reading is my escape, my bridge to learning, my alternate world to anywhere. I love reading! Whether it’s eBooks on my Nook app on my phone & computer, good old fashioned paperback books, hardcover, or audio. They’re all amazing! So far this year I’ve read over 25 books!
7. Cooking/Baking – When I think about cooking/baking I think of my family. My Dad’s side of the family is real big on homemade cooking. Lots of yummy dutch/german food, everything made from scratch! It’s my stress reliever. Something fun to do with my girls. A way to express myself and create yummy food for my family and friends. I like to collect cookbooks and recipes from friends and especially family. I love to bake and cook! And don’t forget EAT!
8. The Great Outdoors – Life wouldn’t be so wonderful without the great outdoors! I love to be outside. Camping, fishing, hunting, going for walks, the park, sports outside, playing with my girls, gardening, etc. Nothing beats fresh air and sunshine! I especially love being able to see the 4 seasons! Spring and Fall being my favorite! But I love the sun & snow as well!
9. Baby Carriers!! O….M…G….what my world would be like with out my various baby carriers! Both of my girls were fussy babies and wanted to be held all the time. THANKFULLY I discovered the ring sling, the Lovey Duds Wrap (www.loveyduds.com), and the Ergo Baby Carrier ( http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/). The ring sling & the Lovey Duds Wrap got me through the first 6 months. I was able to nurse with my babies in them, do things around the house, grocery shop by myself with two children, etc. And the Ergo is amazing now that Bella is older and wants to be with me all the time still. She loves being worn on my back.
10. The Mommies Network - http://www.themommiesnetwork.org/index.shtml such an amazing organization! There are 100 different sites that they run in 32 states. It’s a place to meet friends, other mommies, playgroups for your kids, get support, have questions answered about parenting & life, moms nights out, etc. If it weren’t for PeninsulaMommies.com I have no idea how I would have survived living so far from all my family and friends and raising children. I’ve made so many friends through this site a few of which are now some of my best friends! If you’re a mommy be sure to visit their site and see if they have a group near you! If not you should consider applying to start a group through them!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Samantha from Waking Up With the Wilsons

I’m baaaaaaack.  Well, this feature is back after a week off.  Before I introduce you to my friend Samantha, I wanted to share one other little update.  Remember Melissa?  She kicked off this feature and writes her blog – The Guzmann Family Adventures.  In case you don’t remember her (or didn’t click the links to refresh your memory), Melissa was nearing her due date for their first child.  I am now honored and thrilled to introduce you to Jack Thomas!

Isn’t he so adorable?!  And, Melissa deserves a gold star – Jack tipped the scales at 10 pounds, 5 ounces!  Go Melissa, and way to grow, Jack!  And now you can follow Melissa’s blog as she navigates first time motherhood.  Congratulations Melissa and Pete!

And now an equally sweet follow-up introduction – Samantha of Waking Up With the Wilsons!  Samantha is actually the younger sister of my friend Ashley.  I heard so many great and fun things about her, and I finally got to meet her over Labor Day weekend at baby Jacob’s baptism.  I love reading Samantha’s blog because she’s so positive – and it is so genuine; she is just as sweet and unassuming in person!  But enough from me – find out for yourself!

#1 – God.  My Lord and Savior died on the cross for me, so I may be able to be born free of sins – such a passionate love and sacrifice could bestow nothing but my #1 spot for the 10 things I couldn’t live without!

#2 – Christoper, my husband.  The most amazing man in the world – loving, compassionate, selfless, sweet, fun, kid at heart, passionate, and my true love!  My soul mate!

#3 – Zowie, my four legged daughter.  She is the most perfect puppy ever :)  I love her ears and she has such the personality!  She makes our life colorful and Chris and I adore her :)

#4 – My family.  Family means everything to me!  I couldn’t have gotten this far in my life without my amazing parents and now my support has been doubled with Chris’s parents and family.

#5 – Art.  I have an artist side and I absolutely love anything artistic.  Museums, history (I feel like anything ancient is artistic), art galleries, etc.  I feel like those artists that have come before are so amazing – paving the way for those of us today.  They share secrets and inspiration through the artwork they left behind.

#6 – My business – Project Ink Calligraphy by Samantha.  My biggest passion when it comes to art I believe is calligraphy.  It is truly an art form that I love to do because I am able to give each hand style I try a personal Samantha twist.  Each letter is its own piece of art and it is truly fun!  Each artist takes art and finds their niche and my niche is calligraphy!!  Check out my website @ www.projectinkcalligraphybysamantha.com

#7 – Christmas – my all time favorite holiday!  I love the decorations, the Christmas tree lights, the family and fellowship, the smell of the season, bundling up, and most of all the reason for the season – Jesus’ birthday!

#8 – Hot Chocolate.  I love hot chocolate, no matter the season! It can be a zillion degrees outside or freezing cold and I will drink it – no matter!!

#9 – Cooking.  It is becoming a passion!  I was never the chef growing up but as I started cooking when Chris and I moved from our apartment into our own home, I have loved every second of it and have even volunteered to host and cook Christmas this year!  I was so excited that I have already picked out the dinner menu!!!

#10 – Ha-ha – couldn’t help myself but the #10 spot definitely goes to my IPad!  Just recently got one and I am so unsure how i have done without one all of these years!  (I know I know that they just came out!) This is the absolutely ONLY way to be completely organized.  I could never keep an appointment pad skinny enough to carry around everything i wanted and one of those little laptops didn’t seem practical!  I now have that ability to have EVERYTHING I could ever want and more with me at all times!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: BrieLynn from Penny Roulette

Good morning, friends!

I’m back for another “10 Things I Can’t Live Without” feature.  I am lucky enough to have a very sweet friend that I met in high school, and attended college with – BrieLynn!  Brie just got married to her hubby, Rob, this past June and planned a super special, unique and beautiful wedding.  Oh, and Brie and Rob have a very cute and expressive pup, Meiko (Brie – Eden loves her and wants to “take her for a walk to the park with Simey-Pal!”)  She is so creative and fun and I can’t wait for you to “meet” her!  Here’s her “10 Things:”

Rob (duh!)

On June 19th this year Rob and I were married.  It was such a wonderful day to have been surrounded by our family and friends.  We spent the entire day with smiles on our faces and so much love in our hearts.  People always ask how I like marriage and I giggle because we hardly ever see each other! Rob is a PhD. Candidate for Bio-Analytical Chemistry so he spends most of his time at lab trying to make his remaining schooling fly by.  The time we do get to spend together is amazing.  We try to cook, Rob hangs things on the walls for me, we go play tennis/golf, and we daydream of all the exciting moments life will bring our way in the future….graduation, houses, babies, etc.  (Y’all – Brie was a gorgeous bride!)

Meiko

Three years ago we adopted our little Boston terrier.  Meiko brings so much joy to us.  She is crated during the day in a very spacious “house” where we give her a treat when we leave for the day.  When we get home and let her out she has saved her treat and runs around the apartment with the treat in her mouth so proud that she saved it and can show it to us. Another cute thing she does is whenever one of us gets in the shower she bolts from where she was and sits right outside the tub waiting for us to finish.  I feel very passionate about adopting dogs. This is my little PSA, there are over 6 million dogs that need to be rescued in the US alone. Hopefully many of you readers know how much love a four legged fur ball supplies! When Rob and I move into a place with a yard in the next 2 years we will be adopting a friend for Meiko.

Bobby Pin/Headband/hair tie

For the past couple years I have worn a headband 90% of the time.  At first it was to match my outfit as the perfect accessory then I realized it was a great tool to keep my bangs back as I was growing them out.  Now, I’m just so accustomed to seeing one on my head it has become part of my checklist while getting ready for the day.  I try to keep an extra bobby pin in my pocket and a hair tie around my wrist because even if I style my hair it’s up in a bun by 10am.

Family

It’s a rare day when I don’t talk to my Mom on the phone, have a gmail chat session with my sister, or a get a text from my Dad.  Thank goodness for technology to allow us to keep in touch.  This year is going to be a lot different than last in the sense that Rob and I won’t be making the 625 mile round trip to Kalamazoo every other weekend to help plan/prepare for our wedding.  We were spoiled to have spent so much time with my parents during the last year and I will truly miss those very short weekends this upcoming year, though I’m sure our wallets will appreciate not filling up the gas tank quite as much.

Day Planner

Even though I have my iPhone I keep a daily planner.  My job requires me to be out and about on 4-5 meetings a day so I desperately need to keep organized.  I’m such a visual person that I need to see how my days are planned out on paper, reading it on a tiny screen doesn’t help…not to mention, technology isn’t reliable.  I would hate to miss an appointment because my phone was dead or not functioning correctly.  Fortunately this system is working! I haven’t missed a meeting yet!

Working out

As of the beginning of 2010 I became a fitness freak.  It all started because I wanted to look good in my wedding dress. Let’s be honest, what bride doesn’t?!  It has now become a lifestyle.  I love the way I feel after working out and I am loving the way I feel in my skin.  I try to work out at least 4 days a week and am successful most weeks.  The only time I don’t get my sweat on is when I have an important networking event for work.  My most favorite class I attend is called Zumba.  It’s a Latin based workout that is more like a dance party and everyone should do it. My hair is normally a lighter brown, this photo was right after a Zumba class.

Gummy Bears

I looooooove gummy bears, especially Haribo ones, and more specifically the clear pineapple ones.  (Me too, Brie!  The pineapple ones are delish!) They are a staple at the movies and on the Friday before the wedding when my bridesmaids asked what I would like when we went to the spa for manicures/pedicures I specifically asked for Haribos. There are many fake gummy bear options out there and none are up to par, trust me.

Diet Coke

I have become addicted.  It’s so bad; I’ll drink about 2 or 3 a day.  I prefer fountain over bottle or can with light ice.  I blame McDonalds for have $1 any size sodas over the summer. Must. Start. Drinking. More. Water.

Weekly phone calls with Grandmother

I call my Grandmother at least once a week.   On my way home from teaching ballet on Wednesday nights are my normal phone calls but occasionally I’ll call out of the blue. We chat about our week and what we are looking forward to in the upcoming weeks.  She knows everything that’s going on in my world and it’s nice because if I’m struggling or celebrating that particular day she is a part of it and I know she loves feeling included.  I like to believe I’m my Grandmothers favorite Granddaughter, (I did get married in a Catholic Church after all!) though I’m sure she loves us all equally.  I do get a phone call on Thursdays if I skip a phone call to make sure everything is fine. Grandmother insisted on cutting our cake at the wedding, she was very generous with the serving size.

Chapstick

I have two different types in my purse, one at my office, one in my work bag, one in my car and I’m pretty sure I left a tube of carmex in each of my jackets.  Even though it sounds like I’m prepared for chapped lips, I still find myself searching for a little lip remedy.  Just as an FYI, don’t buy the strawberry carmex, it’s not wonderful at all as noted in the photo.

Isn’t BrieLynn great?!  I am so blessed to have such fun, funny, and sweet blogging friends!  Head over to Brie’s blog, Penny Roulette, for more!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without: Melissa from The Guzmann Family Adventures

Y’all, I’m finally back.  Sort-of.  I was successfully a Martha instead of a Mary, and truly enjoyed our time with Micah’s mom and dad.  It was so great, but it also means that I was absent from the blog.  Did ya miss me?!  No worries, I will be back sometime this week with a more thorough update with lots of fun photos.

In the meantime, I’m starting a new little somethin’ for you to enjoy.  Each week, I’ll be featuring a blog friend.  Most of them are ladies I know “in real life,” and a couple are friends I’ve made through blogging and have never actually met in person!  The topic will always be “10 Things I Can’t Live Without” and I can’t wait to read what everyone comes up with.

Melissa starts us out on this feature.  I met Melissa my freshman year of college.  She was the Clubs & Organizations Director for Student Senate, and I was a low-on-the-totem-pole Senate representative for one of the dorms.  Each senator is assigned to a committee.  I happened to be assigned to the Public Relations Committee (with my all-time favorite Director, Kelli Jo!), and also volunteered a little bit of time to the Clubs & Organizations Committee.  Melissa was always a bunch of fun and very welcoming, and I’ve always liked and respected her.  I was so tickled when she wrote to me many months ago and told me how much she liked my blog.  So sweet!  Melissa is happily married to Pete, and they are expecting their first child, a son named Jack, in just a few short weeks.  I’m so thrilled for them!  You can catch up with Melissa on her blog, The Guzmann Family Adventures.   Without further ado, here is Melissa’s list of “10 Things I Can’t Live Without”:

1.  Ice pack – this reusable ice pack has been my lifesaver the past couple of months.  I work for a bank, sitting for hours on end at my desk at a computer.  This has to be possibly one of the worst positions for a pregnant woman to be in all day, but I do try to get up and move around as often as possible.  Anyway usually around lunch time my back is starting to hurt, so I run to the kitchen and grab my ice pack out of the freezer.

2.  Amy Coe Preggle Pillow – As a natural “back” sleeper, I’ve had a really hard time getting comfortable at night.  I purchased this pillow at the beginning of my 2nd trimester from Babies ‘R Us hoping it would help with the above mentioned back pain.  I searched online for solutions and everyone seemed to say the same thing that I needed to start sleeping on my side.  I’m not sure why I was so surprised by this, but I figured as long as I wasn’t sleeping on my belly I’d be fine.  Well low and behold the weight of a growing Baby on my internal organs and spine at night isn’t exactly the best thing, so on my side I went.  Except, I had a problem actually staying on my side.  I generally sleep with the long end of the pillow along my back and the “hook” part between my knees.  Pete (my husband) thinks its very bizarre and says it takes up half the bed, but I think it really helps me so I’m sticking with it!

3.  Blackberry – I am pathetic, I have to admit that I have 2 Blackberries.  I know this is ridiculous, but one is for work and one is for personal use.  I find this one piece of technology to be so convenient and beneficial to me each and everyday.  Whether its keeping in touch with friends, keeping in touch with the office, or reading the news I can always find a way occupy my time.  My BB makes riding the bus to/from work each day more productive or at least more enjoyable.  I admit that sometimes I’m probably a bit too connected, but it is nice to have the world at my finger tips.

4.  Desk fan – This little desk fan has made the summer much more bearable at work.  I have been extremely warm this summer (mostly due to pregnancy) and the people I work with always seem to be cold.  So in the spirit of compromise I purchased a small desk fan rather than continuously complain that the AC isn’t on high enough for me.  The best thing is that the fan is pretty quiet and powerful at the same time.  I’m sure I’ll be using it for years to come since I’m generally more likely to be warm than cold anyway.

5.  Facebook – Another thing I kind of hate to admit, but I am pretty dependent on Facebook.  Living far away from friends and family, this has been a great tool for keeping in touch.  I have also found FB to be helpful when I travel for work because in a new city I can easily find out who I know that lives there and try to make plans to meet up.  It’s also been neat to see pictures of people’s vacations, especially when we were planning a trip to the same place.  A quick message to the person and you have a recommendation for dinner, entertainment, etc.  Mostly I just like to keep in touch with people and their lives and this is any easy too to do so.

6.  iPod Touch – I sit at a desk most of my day, and sometimes I just need some music to get me through.  Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum on my iPod.  I also enjoy using my iPod to watch videos or play games while riding the bus or traveling for work.

7. Burt’s Bees Toothpaste – I am a compulsive teeth-brusher, and discovered a few years back that I am actually allergic to SLS which is some kind of cheap foaming agent included in just about every toothpaste these days.  Well thankfully after moving to Houston the doctor I saw for a routine physical mentioned that I should look for a toothpaste that specifically says SLS-free.  For the next couple of years I paid like $9 a tube for Tom’s SLS-free toothpaste, but just discovered that Burt’s Bees also offers an SLS-free one for about $5.  This still seems ridiculously expensive for toothpaste so I don’t let Pete use it, but at least I don’t get ulcers in my mouth anymore!

8. Catholic Church – I am adding the Catholic Church has one of my 10 “things” because I was just thinking this morning how great it is to be a member of such a community.  I really think of the Church as a community I have been a member of since birth.  I have been lucky to be a member of some great parishes in my time.  First of all my home parish of St. Joseph, then the Aquinas College chapel, St. Michael’s in Houston, and now Christ the Good Shepherd near our house in Spring.  Each one has its one feel, but I know what to expect from a Catholic Church.  I feel lucky to be able to find such uniformity no matter where in the world I am.  I have been a Lector for Mass on 3 different Continents and it was always the same.  I think that’s cool!  I have met some of my best friends and formed amazing relationships with people I met through church.  When I moved to Houston I knew basically no one in this big city, but it didn’t take long for me to make friends just by trying out all of the young adult groups at different parishes in the city.

9. My husband – I really can’t imagine my life without my husband Pete.  It almost seems crazy to write that because we’ve known each other just less than 3 years, but it seems like we’ve known each other much longer.  I have always been an independent person, but I have come to rely on him so much over the past few years…in a good way I think.  I’ve learned so much from him and he’s taught me so much about myself that I never knew.  I think it’s amazing how we met at the exact perfect time for both of us.  Just a month earlier and I’m not sure we would be where we are today.  God gave us each other and showed us the way, I truly believe that.  Now he is blessing us with a child and we are absolutely thrilled.  I am so proud of Pete for going back to school to get his MBA at night.  While sometimes I wish he wasn’t so busy studying or doing homework, I admire his dedication.  I am so lucky to have him as my husband and best friend.

10. Traditions – I feel like I’m stretching to come up with something for #10, but I just saw a picture of our Christmas tree from last year on my computer and it made me think about Holidays and Traditions.  I LOVE most every holiday and the traditions that accompany them.  I genuinely enjoy putting on a Halloween costume, love Christmas shopping for others, eating all kinds of good food at Thanksgiving, getting an Easter basket from the Easter bunny (a.k.a. my parents), going to church 3 days in a row for Holy week, getting all dolled up for dinner on Valentine’s Day, and so many other special things.  I love that Pete and I have had a few years under our belt to start combining the traditions from our childhood into traditions we will pass down to our children.  Sometimes I have to remind myself that change is ok and that my way isn’t the only right way to celebrate something, but I think we’ve done pretty good so far.

Thank you, Melissa, for sharing your “10 Things” with us!  Everyone, check out Melissa’s blog when you get a chance, and I’ll be we’ll be seeing photos of handsome little Jack soon, too!
